Hi my name is Sally Lister - Welcome to my website.

During the last few years I have been exploring the physicality of paint. By looking at the different properties of paint through various processes such as dripping, pouring, staining, masking and building, I have tried to emphasise different elements in different outcomes such as fluidity, luminosity, density, opacity, and translucency. My work is abstract and expressionistic and is a response to the way I feel physically and emotionally not only about the landscape but also about the colours and shapes I experience all around me. What has always fascinated me is how a cell can absolutely mirror an aerial view of the World thus illustrating that microcosm and macrocosm walk hand in hand.

I'm an abstract painter because I prefer a more ambiguous picture plane or surface so that in my paintings the shapes and colours could be interpreted as microscopic cells or aerial view of islands. Therefore the viewer can project his own experience and can react purely on a sensory level. Thus it is this feeling of space, translucency and monumentality which I am trying to create in my paintings. A feeling of the way cells merge with each other and interweave, the sperm searching for the egg, the divine moment when the fingers of God reach out and touch the fingers of Adam in Michelangelo's 'The Creation Of Adam'.

I hope to create spatial relationships with optical suggestions by creating certain lines and colours which complement each other, intermingle and interplay. Colour has always been a major inspiration and it is this overlapping of colour planes which suggests a feeling of space, monumentality and elegance. My main influences are Jackson Pollock who showed me the importance of gesture, Helen Frankenthaler, Morris Louis, Cy Twombly and Paul Jenkins.
